I took a writing class years ago that advised us to spend at least five minutes every day jotting down the first thing that came to mind. I do use a good-old fashioned journal to jot down random story ideas, names, places, almost anything that I might want to incorporate into a story at a later date. I also have a folder on my computer so I can save anything I find on the Internet that might work with a story I have in mind.
