Discover Pretty Please by Tracey Michael

Please give a warm welcome to Gwen from Pretty Please by Tracey Michael today as we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author? Hi! My name’s Gwen. I pouted and annoyed my author until she wrote my story. I use those on Thea, my best friend, too. *giggle*

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate? She’s been my best friend, forever. I can’t imagine my life without her.

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner(s)? My author didn’t tell anyone this, but… Thea’s desk at her garage. It was lunch time and it was quick, but it was sooooo HOT.

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man? I always thought of myself as a boxer brief kinda girl, but Thea wears these boy shorts…*grin*

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure fire trick they can do to seduce you? Romance would do it. Thea isn’t much of a romantic, but if she did candlelight and soft music, I’d be a puddle of goo for her.

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed? Oh, that’s a good one! Thea’s very ticklish, especially on her hip bones. One little nibble or a graze of my manicured nails has goosebumps raising on her arms and her breath hitching.

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Pretty Please? My author didn’t embarrass me, thank goodness. But she made me work for my happy ending. That’s good, though. It wouldn’t be the same if it was easy.

Q: Anything else you would like to add? I just want to thank you for having me, today. I’m very excited about the re-release of Pretty Please on August 10th from Torquere Press!

Thank you Gwen for joining us on 'Meet the Character' day here at Dawn’s Reading Nook Blog. You can find all of Tracey Michael’s books at .

Thea and Gwen have been best friends since they were kids. Thea will do anything for Gwen and she uses it to her advantage whenever necessary. A coerced shopping trip turns into a “date”. A few tears turn into unexpected sex. Friendship turns into love. Wait. When did that happen? And do they want to pursue those new feelings? What happens if an attempt at a relationship ruins everything? Thea isn’t sure she wants to risk it, but Gwen is sure she does. When Thea turns her “straight” best friend down, Gwen is crushed. Thea has always known she was a lesbian and she loves Gwen more than anything, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be Gwen’s experiment. That will only leave her with a broken heart in the end. Can Gwen change Thea’s mind and prove that her love is true?

An Inside Look at… Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover

An Inside Look at… Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover
By Kelli A. Wilkins
Hi everyone,

Not all romances are the same, and not all romance authors are the same. Although I write in several romance genres (contemporary, gay, historical, fantasy), I also like to write horror stories. Many people think that’s an odd combination, but I like to say that one half of my brain writes the horror, and the other half writes the romance. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before I combined the two and started writing paranormal romances.

My latest contemporary paranormal, Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover, is a different type of romance. For starters, the novella is told in the first person from the hero’s point of view. The story also makes use of a setting where you don’t normally find vampires—the beach!

I got the idea for the story while sitting on a nearly deserted beach at the end of the summer season. (I’m not a beach person, but I was there with my husband, a surfer.) As I sat there watching the few people milling around, I wondered: “What if a vampire went to the beach? And what if she fell in love with a surfer?”

I liked the idea of contrasting typical sun worshipping beachgoers and surfers with a darkness-loving elusive vampire. Besides, what could be more mismatched than a die-hard surfer falling in love with a nocturnal blood-drinker?

I started toying with ideas and knew that although the book is about a vampire, I wanted to keep the central focus on Brian and Anya’s relationship and not on the ‘bloodier’ aspects of vampirism (show her feeding, etc.) There’s a fine line when blending horror and romance into paranormal romance. Too much gore or a “too terrifying” creature can snap the readers (and the characters) out of the romance and into a full-on horror story.

When I wrote the book I made sure that the love scenes were highly sensual and almost surreal. Aside from being a vampire, Anya is a woman with needs, and she makes sure Brian satisfies them. I don’t remember how I was inspired to have the story told by Brian, but it worked. Readers and reviewers like the first-person aspect—it pulls you into a story that would seem unbelievable.

Several people have asked me if it’s hard to write horror and romance. Not really. I enjoy it. Writing horror allows me to change up my writing style, use different settings, and create characters you wouldn’t find in a romance. My horror stories are more psychological/spooky/creepy than gory, and I like to explore darker plots and not always give the characters a happy ending (as I do in my romances).

Here’s the summary and an excerpt from Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover:
Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover

The moment Brian spotted Anya sitting on the moonlit beach, he was hooked. Beautiful, smart, and sexy, Anya was the girl of his dreams. She didn’t mind that he spent the hot summer days riding the ocean waves, because once the sun set, he belonged to her—all night long!

Everything is perfect between them—until Brian discovers Anya’s shocking secret. Can Brian give up the sun, sand, and surf to be with the woman he loves?

Read Brian’s first-hand account of their unusual love story in… Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover.

And a steamy excerpt:
Anya draped her arms around my neck and pulled me close, as if she were hungry for my touch. Her wet lips met mine, and a shock coursed through my body. Anya’s lips were soft and supple, but ice cold. It was the strangest kiss I’d ever experienced, and it stirred something primal in me.
Anya kissed me deeper and twisted her tongue around mine. The world seemed to spin, and once again I felt myself falling under her spell. I was hers, willing to do whatever she wanted. After a moment, she released me.
“Wait for me on the beach. I’ll let you take me any way you want,” she whispered, then dove back into the water.
I made my way to shore as quietly as possible and flopped onto the sand. I closed my eyes and tried to think rationally. What was Anya doing out there? Nobody could see in the ocean at night or safely swim with sharks after dark. Maybe Anya was a mermaid. I chuckled at my own stupidity. Mermaids weren’t cold, they couldn’t vanish into thin air, and they didn’t hide from the sun. That was a vamp—
“Look what I found.”
I opened my eyes. Anya stood over me, holding something shiny in her hand. The gold ring gleamed in the moonlight. I took it from her and studied it. The stone was dark, almost blood red. I handed it back to her and she slipped it on her ring finger.
“You really should let me explore. There are a lot of interesting things down there,” she said.
I scowled. “How did you find that in the water? It’s pitch black.”
“Don’t ask, Brian.” Anya straddled my hips and kissed me. She bent close, offering me her breast. I drew it into my mouth and sucked eagerly. To my surprise, she felt flushed and warm, and tasted salty, like the ocean.
Anya gasped and arched her head back. “Make love to me, Brian. I want to feel alive,” she said as she unzipped my jeans….

EXCERPT Focusing solely on Aaron, he manhandled him as gently as he could. Over the past several months of his and Aaron’s relationship TJ noticed that the trust Aaron had in him not to hurt him was mind-blowing. It was his touch, sight unseen sometimes, that would always center and calm Aaron. Knowing this, TJ always tried to use this sparingly and held it in the reverence it deserved. Ryan, Aaron’s best friend and TJ’s nephew, didn’t even have this ability. Gently pulling Aaron out of the recliner, TJ maneuvered himself behind Aaron and unceremoniously plopped down into the chair. Slowly TJ repositioned Aaron and seconds later Aaron was in TJ’s lap and they were cuddling. Yes, CUDDLING. It was a major shock to TJ and everyone around him that he actually liked to cuddle. Yet again another revelation these past few months brought as TJ descended into the rabbit hole that was “Aaron Samuel” and found it got more intriguing by the day. Wrapping his arm around Aaron’s slim shoulders brought the needed warmth to Aaron’s shivering body. “Aw, look how cute and comfy the two resident lovebirds look,” David said with a snicker as he draped the blanket across Aaron’s lap and chest.

Please give a warm welcome to Cliff from The Brothers Menage by Louisa Bacio today as we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

Louisa’s going to be in an upcoming boxset Wickedly Twisted: Fairy Tales for Adults with a group of authors. They were each to pick a fairy tale to adopt in a wicked manner. Louisa shied away from some of the more traditional tales. If you read her, you’ll know she has a thing for brothers.

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?

I was on the hunt, and saw her luscious streak of red hair. I couldn’t help but follow the path she took me on. She’s an alluring minx! BTW — she also can shift into just about any type of animal.

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner(s)?

Our first time was in a grassy meadow in broad daylight. I expect many more adventures in the future.

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?

Totally commando. It’s the only way.

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure fire trick they can do to seduce you?

It’s all so new, Daphne does have to do much! She has this wild, natural scent and honesty that’s refreshing. Plus, she enjoys getting back to her animalistic side, let’s say!

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed?

Behind the back of her knee, and right between her legs!

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in The Brothers Menage?

Hmmmm. She puts me through a few hoops. I’d say, being willing to share a mate with my brother Jacob.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

If you like your adult fairy tales Wickedly Twisted, delve in for more!

Thank you Cliff for joining us on 'Meet the Character' day here at Dawn’s Reading Nook Blog. You can find all of Louisa Bacio books at amazon.com/author/louisabacio.

Excerpt

“I see someone in the driver’s seat,” one of the bad guys said. They sounded very far away. It was the bulletproof glass. Where the fuck is Zuniga? I pulled out my phone again, texting for backup, I hated having to do it in the middle of a job but I wasn’t going to be much use to the mission if I was shot full of holes. I wasn’t invincible as much as I liked to pretend to myself that I was. I couldn’t play cowboy and take on these pistol-packing peanuts alone. Or could I? Go down in a blaze of glory? I didn’t want a life without Lucky. They’d be doing me a big fucking favor if they shot me. The message came back. Stay where you are. Don’t move. “He’s texting! He’s texting!” one of the little assholes outside yelled. “Shoot him!” the guy beside me said. I heard the one sound I didn’t want to hear. A gunshot. It bounced off the passenger window. They started to rock the SUV back and forth. Where the fuck is my backup? I drew my gun out of the holster as I heard the second sound I absolutely did not want to hear. My door releasing. And opening. I was ready for the little shit and shot him from my left hand, clear in the chest with my new, handy-dandy, state-of-the art, gazillion-watt Taser X26C gun. His eyes rolled up like escalator stairs and he flew back, billowing out on the ground, twitching with the force of the electro-magnetic impulse. “Motherfucker!” his friends yelled. They ran toward the front, shooting away at me. I blasted back, getting one little fucker in the shoulder with my state-issue .32, with my right hand. The third little bastard screamed at me. What an asshole. He jumped over his friend’s writhing body and popped off a couple of shots. One hit the driver’s door. As he neared me, I closed the door toward me and whumped him as he tried to yank at it. It smacked him in the face and I heard a satisfying crunch of bones. I let him have a little Taser juice just because I felt like it. He was on his knees calling me a pig and a honky. No manners. I closed and locked my door. We’d been had. How did he know I was a pig? And calling me a honky? He was like something out of a seventies’ blaxploitation movie. I called my supervising unit. Nobody responded. I had three prone assholes outside and an even bigger problem on my hands. Somebody had ambushed us. Keeping my eyes on the road, I realized there’d been no traffic passing by me during the entire encounter with the three guys still sprawled on the ground. Calling 9-1-1 was supposed to be my last resort but as far as I knew, my partner had been ambushed and the supervising unit was out of commission. My cell phone rang. I prayed it wouldn’t be Lucky.

All her life, a faint memory of her parents and fire has glowed at the back of Rachel Quinn's mind. With her parents long dead, there is no one to clarify what it means.

When a gorgeous winged man rescues her from a pack of werewolves, something flares to life inside Rachel. Suddenly she can see the paranormal world around her, a world unseen by mortals. And far more complicated.

When Phoenix's massive orange-and-red wings erupt from his back, he knows his Challenge-an age-old battle against his Demonos counterpart-is upon him. Heeding Rachel's cry for help adds a layer of complexity never seen in any previous Challenge.

Rachel, they discover, isn't entirely human. Like Phoenix, she commands fire. Fire calls to fire, and soon they are succumbing to a fierce attraction. As the Challenge bears down on them, though, Phoenix must discover what the Demonos has in store for mankind. About Jenna Ryan

Jenna Ryan was born in Victoria, British Columbia. After long stints in different cities across Canada, she returned home to Vancouver Island where she has lived ever since. She has had thirty-one books published in the Harlequin Intrigue series. Her ideas come from real life, and she is helped in her writing by her sister Kathy.

She enjoys reading and is a big fan of women's fiction, psychological suspense and mystery novels. She also enjoys watching classic suspense movies. She loves strong heroines, heroes with character, romance stories and a good whodunit by the fire on a rainy night.
Her heritage is a blend of English and Irish — which is probably where the gift of blarney comes from. She is unmarried, but involved with a wonderful man. She also has a little white cat named Sheena.

Whenever she is not writing, she travels as much as time and finances will allow. After North America, Europe is her favorite continent to explore, because it was in those countries that many of the myths and legends she drew upon in her early years of writing were born.

Growing up, she considered various careers and dabbled in several of them, including, after university, the travel industry, tourism, sales and modeling. Work in the fashion industry in Toronto and Montreal gave her an interesting peek into various aspects of that world. She learned that where money, power and people come together, there will always be unpredictability — an element she feels is essential to a strong mystery. Add a healthy measure of personal conflict, an intriguing setting and a spicy romance into the mix, and you have the ingredients for what she believes to be the best of all possible stories — a great romantic suspense.

Talking with author Zane Riley

What started your interest in writing?

Reading fascinating stories as a kid. I always had a vivid imagination, and reading grew that exponentially. I read the stories and when they ended my brain kept going, popping off new ideas and imagining what happened next to those characters. So naturally, I eventually started to write those ideas out.

If zombies attacked what kind of supplies would you want?

The basic toiletries and a lot of alcohol. The toiletries are just to last me for as long as I survive which probably won’t be very long. The alcohol, however, is partially for myself and also for the zombies. I’ve always wondered if you could get a zombie drunk, and how that would affect their behavior since they’re already the undead. Maybe it would have the opposite effect that it does on a living human. Only one way to find out.

If you could sit down with any author dead or alive who would it be?

Sherman Alexie. I’ve read a few of his books and I’m planning on getting more, but I really love what I’ve read of his work. He writes about Native American characters, which isn’t something you see a lot of in mainstream literature. One of my professors in college had one of his books on our reading list and I loved it. It was about a boy growing up on a reservation and then going to a white school off the reservation, and it was so refreshing to see that perspective. Seeing both the external culture clash and then his internal clash with conforming versus not versus trying to maintain his identity when his history classes and classmates tried to erase it.

Do you keep a notebook near your for when new ideas pop into your head?

I try to, although lately I’ve been failing at that. I’m about to move across the country, so everything I own is in boxes. Or buried under boxes or stuffed behind something. My room’s a disaster zone of cardboard cubes. Fortunately, I have a notes app on my phone and a good memory so I’m managing to suffer the move with my new writing ideas (mostly) still intact.

If you write a series do you reread your previous books before you begin the new one?

Definitely. It gives me a chance to get my head back into that world and reacquaint myself with the characters. I reread Go Your Own Way when I wrote With or Without You, and I reread both for the third one I just started writing. It drops me right back into the world as I left it so it’s very easy to continue the story.

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?

“Thank you!” seems the obvious choice, but it’s still the truest. So many of you have hung with me for years while I’ve been writing online. You’ve been reading my work since I first started posting and you’ve encouraged me countless times over the years. You’re the reason I had the confidence to transform the original Go Your Own Way into these books, so thank you. And to any new readers, welcome! I hope you love these boys and their story as much as I do.

For readers who haven't tried your books yet, how do you think your editor or loyal readers would describe your books?

Some of my readers, especially those who have become friends over the years, would probably shout a lot about me breaking their hearts with these boys or this character. A lot of “How dare you!” would be involved, because Lennox’s journey in these books isn’t an easy one as he has a lot of ups and downs that can mess with your emotions.

My editor would undoubtedly be more articulate. I love her to death, honestly, she’s so wonderful. She would most likely wax poetic about the realism I bring to my sex scenes. It’s becoming a stark characteristic of my writing from what I’m told, and when I stop to consider it, I suppose it’s true. I don’t care to write sex scenes that are continuously perfect or steeped with everyone have the greatest orgasm on the face of the earth. I want my characters to be themselves, regardless of whether or not they’re naked together or on stage singing a duet. So I bring in their awkwardness, their clumsiness, their uncertainties. I write the sex I expect and experience in real life which is silly and fun and also romantic and emotional and sometimes unfinished. I like to say I keep the story in the sex, because I read a lot where the sex scene starts and it seems like everything else stops. As if the sex scene happens inside of a bubble where nothing can go wrong.

I’m always looking for book recommendations. What books have you been reading? Would you recommend them?

I’m actually pretty limited on books right now since almost everything I own is in boxes. Moving is a pain sometimes. I’ve reading two books at the moment on my Kindle. The first is A Game of Thrones which I’m rereading out of boredom. The second book is Seven Tears at High Tide which is adorable so far. I’d recommend it. It’s about two teenage boys, Kevin and Morgan. Morgan is a selkie who comes on land to fulfill Kevin’s wish to have a summer of love.

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?

Too much in all honesty, ha ha. Trying to answer a call at work? There’s Lennox all super excited about, like, polka dots or something ridiculous. In the shower humming my favorite song? Nope, say hi to Will chanting baseball statistics and running through all the pitching signs so he doesn’t forget them. Time to go to sleep? Forget it. Every night, some character wants to come join me with their greatest sadness at two in the morning when I should be sleeping. I love my characters to bits, but sometimes I just want a day of normalcy.

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?

Oh, a third book for this series! It isn’t named yet, officially or unofficially, but I’m in the process of writing it. Most likely it’s going to be the final one, but I won’t say for sure.

Besides my Go Your Own Way series, I have two other ideas I’m considering for longer stories. Both feature transgender characters since that’s very important to me. The first is tentatively called The Soulmate Cure and the other is still nameless. It’s a story about a teenage boy who who’s struggling to deal with his brother’s death and salvage his relationship with his parents.

Excerpt:
The band room was empty when he pushed the door open, but the piano was set up like it was almost every afternoon these days. Only Mr. Robinette and a music stand littered with sheet music was absent.
   "Hello?"
The silence struck Lennox as odd, but as he sat down he also realized how strange it was to announce himself. So much had changed since the first time he'd snuck in here to play on his own. Now he was auditioning for some college he still couldn't fathom.
To make Will happy. And maybe a little bit for himself.
"Ah, I wondered if you were going to show up."
Mr. Robinette was behind him, the door to his office now wide open. He'd taken off his tie and undone a few buttons on his shirt like he did most afternoons when they practiced.
"You just want to play it through a few times or mess around with something else?"
Lennox took a seat at the piano, but didn't both opening his bag. He'd memorized the piece he was playing by Valentine's Day and now, almost two weeks later, he could write it out measure for measure on blank sheet music. But playing it was becoming repetitive. For two hours, three times a week, almost nonstop with the same four pages and nothing else.
"I'd rather try something new. That piece is getting a little old."
Mr. Robinette smiled and pulled a chair up beside him. "I had a nightmare the other night and it was the theme song while I ran around a haunted house Scooby Doo style."
"You didn't catch a ride in the Mystery Machine, did you? I've always wanted that van."
"I've got a lunch box version of it. It doesn't fit much though because it's too narrow. Anyway, play what you want. I'll be here until about four-thirty, so it's all yours."
As Mr. Robinette returned to his office, Lennox pulled what had become his music notebook out of his bag and opened it to the latest page. He'd taken to composing during class when he should have been taking notes, especially calculus where he had no reason to pay attention anyway.
The latest page was a tune he'd come up with while the other kids had been tapping their pencils and erasing answers. Every moment of his life carried a rhythm, a melody, and an emotion he could create with, and his notebook was becoming a testament to that. He played through everything he'd jotted down over the past few days, but after several rounds he kept coming back to one. It was a piano version he'd tried—and mostly failed—to create of one of the songs Will had played on a loop a few weeks ago.
"I'm getting ready to lock up!"
Mr. Robinette's voice carried out of the office and into the band room. A few minutes and several jingles of Mr. Robinette's keys later, the office door was shut and Lennox was closing the cover on the keys.
"That last piece you were playing, was it a cover?"
Lennox shrugged as they headed for the door.
"It was supposed to be. Didn't sound much like the song."
"Well, the others did. They were all really good, even the ones that weren't covers."
   "Uh, thanks."
Lennox watched him at the door to the parking lot for a moment. He'd been a great help over the last month—all year if Lennox was honest. Mr. Robinette had believed in him in his own way since school had begun, and thanks to him he had a decent shot at this audition.
"Thanks for… all of this. I actually feel like—just thanks."
Mr. Robinette gave him a genuine smile and patted him on the shoulder.
"You're very welcome. Let me know how it goes when you get back, okay? I'm rooting for you. Got all of my fingers and limbs crossed. You deserve the chance. Don't doubt that or yourself."
   "I-I won't."
It was funny to have so many people believing in him after so long. Happiness was a strange feeling as well. Until he'd let Will into his life he couldn't remember how to capture such a feeling in his chest and keep it there.
