Talking with author Suzey Ingold...

What started your interest in writing?

I think it came from a love for reading and for a good story. I wanted to tell stories of my own, even as a child, and I used to pen these little tales in as careful handwriting as I could manage with some shaky drawings alongside the text.

If zombies attacked what kind of supplies would you want?

Some really good costume make-up—having considered this to great length (World War Z really kept me up at night) I believe that the best plan is to hide in plain sight. If I can disguise myself to look like a zombie, then hopefully I’ll be safe.

If you could sit down with any author dead or alive who would it be?

It would probably have to be F. Scott Fitzgerald, just to have him tell me tales of the Jazz Age and living in that era—and in return, I could tell him about how New York is today.

Do you keep a notebook near your for when new ideas pop into your head?

All the time—I have so many notebooks, everywhere. There’s one in every drawer and cupboard in my flat, and typically one in every single bag I ever might carry around. The worst part is when it comes to trying to find where it was I wrote down that one idea I had at 7:52pm the day before on the bus…

If you write a series do you reread your previous books before you begin the new one?

I haven’t yet written a series but I imagine I would have to reread the previous books. Sometimes, even when starting a new section of any book, I might reread the end of the previous section just to get back into the character’s voice and to remember where exactly I’d left off.

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?

Just a sincere and honest thank you and a hope that everyone reading Speakeasy enjoys it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

For readers who haven't tried your books yet, how do you think your editor or loyal readers would describe your books?

Well, here’s how I’d hope they would describe them: evocative and sweet books with a strong narrative and well-rounded characters.

I’m always looking for book recommendations. What books have you been reading? Would you recommend them?

I’ve been reading a whole variety of things recently. One I finished a couple of weeks ago was Lodestones by Naomi MacKenzie—hands down one of the best YA books I’ve ever read, and one I would absolutely recommend. I also finished up The Woman Who Stole My Life. I’ve always really liked Marian Keyes; this wasn’t my favorite of all her books, but I’d certainly recommend her as an author. I’m currently on an older book: The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?

Constantly, but I’m such a daydreamer that this is hardly a surprise. It doesn’t take much to distract me into my own head rather than to remain focused on the present, but my muse has a particularly strong pull!

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?

This is really just the beginning. I couldn’t tell you exactly what’ll be coming next but I have no intentions on stopping writing anytime soon. I have a few ideas bouncing around: how do people feel about pirates…?
