The Happiest Time of the Year…yeah right!

Everyone dreams of sugar plums and joyous holiday parties with friends and family, surrounded by evergreen, mistletoe, bright lights and candy canes. Right? Maybe not so much. There are a lot of variables that can turn the picture perfect holiday into a disaster zone… lights that just won’t cooperate, dashing to and from the store to get cranberry sauce, fighting the crowds on Black Friday to get THE PERFECT gift on sale, a parent that FORGETS to move that darn elf (or trying to get down and dirty with your partner with the elf watching), facing your in-laws (or in-laws to be), the company holiday party with the spiked eggnog…you get the idea. Have some fun with the pains of the holiday season.

Submissions should:

  • All stories should all have some trial or tribulation that the main characters deal with over the holidays
  • Be a minimum of 10k, maximum of 40k

The Dark Side

Is your romantic lead a good man, but his job requires him to do really unpleasant things and/or make harsh decisions? We all have a dark side and some people have to use it to do their job. Does he isolate himself because of this? Building walls to protect other people /from him/, positive no one deserves to fall in love with a person like himself? How does a man like that even meet a potential partner?
And what man could fall in love with that kind of anti-hero? What kind of effort would it take to love a man who lives on 'The Dark Side' of life?

Submissions should:

All stories should have a 'dark' hero as
a main character.
Suggestions-- police sniper, a security specialist, a military marksman, an interrogator, an undercover agent in a criminal organization, a medical professional who assists with
end of life  treatment, a government assassin (doesn't have to be our government!), or...maybe an IRS auditor? Get imaginative!
Be a minimum of 5k, maximum of 40k
Any subgenre is welcome and all prohibitive guidelines are observed

Deadline for submissions: June 1, 2016,

Stories will release during the month of September 2016

X Marks the Spot…and we’re not talking about THAT spot

We all have that one spot. You know, the one that makes you shiver or turns you into a pile of goo. Whether it’s the inside of your elbow (on just the right side) or that spot under your left ear, the small of your back, right at your hairline on the left side of your neck…you get the point. Or what if the spot you have makes you go “ewwww”? Licking that certain spot just makes you want to get far, far away…say your nose or toes?

Submissions should:

  • All stories should have a character focused on the spot on another character
  • Suggestions: an established couple where the MC uses that spot to annoy the other for attention; a new couple exploring just where the “acceptable in public” spots are; finding a new spot on your partner that makes him want to take you against the wall
  • Be a minimum of 10k, maximum of 40k
  • Any subgenre is welcome and all prohibitive guidelines are observed
  • Submissions should be sent to special_submissions@mlrpress.com
  • SUBMISSION DEADLINE: June 15, 2016
The Value of a Moment

What is the value of a moment? Do you know in that time and place that your world is changing? Whether it’s… meeting your soul mate… the death of someone close… the birth of a child…joining the military…coming out and being thrown out…graduating college…moving across the country. The moments that make up our lives are varied and numerous but do you know the value of that moment until it’s a memory?

Submissions should:

  • All stories should have a defining moment for a character
  • Be a minimum of 10k, maximum of 40k
  • Any subgenre is welcome and all prohibitive guidelines are observed
  • Submissions should be sent to special_submissions@mlrpress.com
  • SUBMISSION DEADLINE July 10, 2016

Maybe a Hero?

Raymond Chandler once said “down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero; he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man.” If men come in every shape and size then it seems to reason that heroes do too. What really makes up a hero?
Submissions should:

  • All stories should have a hero as a main character – the definition of a hero is up to the author it does not have to be a super hero
  •  Suggestions: a policeman or fireman (or a couple made up of one of each) dealing with the effects to him and his city after 9/11; a returning soldier trying to fit back into home life; two comrades in arms during World War I or II falling in love on the front lines; an EMT just trying to survive after all he’s seen
  • Be a minimum of 10k, maximum of 40k
  •  Any subgenre is welcome and all prohibitive guidelines are observed
  • Submissions should be sent to special_submissions@mlrpress.com
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: August 1, 2016, stories will release during the month of November 2016

Author Day with Rita Trevalyan

This blog will be about what to do while you're waiting for your edits. A lot of it is just marking time. You could do housework, but as semi-– disable as I am, there is a limit to what I can do. When I'm in NaNoWriMo mode, I always assign. from 10 AM to 10:30 AM as the time to perform household tasks. There are also other projects you can work on. I have two: one is my story about Camelot's Merlin the magician awakening in the 21st century after a nap of more than 1600 years. The second one is a story inspired by the death of rockstar David Bowie. If the words just won't come, I will engage in other activities. I have a number of coloring pages that I can print out and color. I can also read. Right now, on my Nook, I am reading a translation of the Aeneid| by Vergil. I am also reading a book titled Outwitting Writer's Block and other Problems of the Pen by Jenna Glatzer. It is a book I got from Writer's Digest. One idea that I got from this book is the "ugly notebook."

This notebook, which for me is a an ugly binder with package of college ruled notebook paper in it, is to get my creative juices flowing. I will scribble in it nonsense phrases, or questions about my characters or plot. This is to warm up my writing muscles. After all dancers and athletes warm up before they start their exercising or their games, or their dancing. We writers should really do the same. I also have a pretty notebook, in which I scribble ideas for either the next step in my story, or my next writing project. Sometimes, in the wee hours of the morning, I will get an idea or a solution, or an insight for a writing problem that has been plaguing me for the last several days. I keep a small notebook by the side of my bed, so that I can jot these ideas down, because all too often, when I awaken fully in morning, that insight or idea is gone, never to return. But if I write it down, it has a dual purpose: the physical act of jotting it down creates an ingrame in my brain, a new dendrite connection and pathway that helps me to remember this insight. I also have the note to refer to. The same that does not seem to happen if it is done digitally. Studies have shown that students who take notes digitally on their laptops or tablets, or even their phones do not retain the information as well as when they physically handwrite their notes. This just vindicates what I have known for decades: kickin' it old school is the best way to proceed.

I am also working on a large crocheting project. It is a blanket with sleeves, which I hope to get done before winter ends, so I can wear it at least once before I have to put it in my winter clothes wardrobe. The brand name for these blankets is Snuggies, but since it's a registered trademark, the creator of the pattern can't use that name. I can only work on it at home, since it's too big to carry around with me. So when I'm out and about, I work on smaller crocheting projects. Right now I'm working on a pouch for my Vampires of the Eternal Night Tarot kit, and then I shall start crocheting socks. I'm crocheting them in the colors that socks are not available in. I am also waiting for my Lucet to come in the mail. A Lucet is a cord making tool that was used in Scandinavia during the Viking age, and then again in the 19th century. It is enjoying a Renaissance right now among certain people who combine their love of history with their love of crafting. My friend Kira Cattan, a fellow writer, has one, and has been singing its virtues for the past several weeks, so I decided to get one. I doubt that it will replace crocheting, but I think it will be interesting. Cords are very handy for all sorts of things; drawstrings for gathered necklines and waistlines, cord for lacing a corset, and many other uses. I now have my lucet, and am in the process of learning cordmaking by using the Youtube videos. I have gone through the videos several times, as it s a steep learning curve. The main challenge I have is keeping the tension of the yarn even.

I have received my first round of edits, completed them, and returned the corrected copy to my editor/publisher. It took far less time than I thought it was going to. I expected to be working on it for over a week, at least 2 days anyway. Instead, it took me barely an hour and a half, and I'm not even a very fast typist. Now I'm waiting for my second round of edits. I just hope it doesn't take as long as the first one did. That is, I hope it doesn't take as long for her to get them back to me as it did for her to get them to me in the first place. I expect to be working on them, once I get them, for far longer than the first round of edits took. Until then, I shall be crocheting, cord making, working on other writing projects, and perhaps even planning a bus trip to old Sacramento.

So there you have it; my plan for avoiding going crazy while I wait for my edits to arrive. My secret for waiting on anything has always been to keep myself so busy that the time passes at at least a normal rate. When I have to wait in line, I'll crochet or read, or write in my diary, which I always keep in my purse. While I wait for the bus, or the light rail train, I crochet, read, or scribble in my diary. While I wait for the doctor to see me, or in the clinical laboratory, I crochet, read, or scribble in my diary. It is a handy way to pass the time when you had nervous fingers like I do. Most people nowadays play with their smart phones, but I believe that I am accomplishing more by doing what I do.

Meet the author...I am Rita Trevalyan, and I've been writing since I was 9 years old, but it wasn't until 2006 that I found a publisher.  I reside in Sacramento, CA with 2 housemates and three utterly ridiculous cats.  My forthcoming book was a NaNoWriMo winner in 2013, and has the working title of Palulukon, although my publisher might change it, if she can find a pithier, more saleable one.  In my spare time, I crochet, embroider, read, listen to music, and go on bus junkets in my adopted city.

Book Spotlight~ Elaine Cantrell's Fortuna

Series Name: NA

Genre: romantic comedy

Publisher: Clean Reads

Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancĂ© into the witness
protection pro-gram would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s
downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who
lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring
she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los
Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling
a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the
country is anything but boring.

Excerpt: My heroine goes to a garden party in costume.

“Why don’t you take Aimee and show her the new gazebo? It’s very nice.”

“Aimee?”

“I’d love to.”

Cade held out his arm to Aimee. “Ma’am, I would be delighted to show
you the gazebo. Do take my arm. The ground is rather uneven.”

“Why, thank you, sir.”

As they strolled toward the gazebo, Aimee allowed the setting to
mesmerize her and capture her imagination. What would it have been like
to attend this party in the year 1860? Would the threat of war have
lent a spice of excitement to the festivities that made ordinary
activities like visiting the gazebo seem new and romantic?

Cade indicated a built-in bench, which circled the inside of the
gazebo. “Would you like to sit down?”

Aimee sat and gathered her skirts around her, admiring the rustle of
her long, crinoline petticoat. She patted the space beside her. “Sit
beside me.”

Cade bowed. “You honor me, Miss Sherwood.”

“You may call me Miss Aimee, sir.”

“Miss Aimee, then.” He raised her hand to his lips and kissed it.

Aimee’s heart took off in a mad gallop. She felt heat rising from her
chest and knew it colored her face an inconvenient shade of red. Oh!
My! Goodness! All he’d done was kiss her hand, and she was melting. If
only she hadn’t left her fan at Miss Gladys’ table.

Cade kept hold of her hand even though she’d expected him to let go of
it. His calloused fingers felt so male, so strong, so warm that another
wave of heat washed over her and almost took her breath away.

“You look beautiful tonight, Miss Aimee. There’s not a woman at the
party who can touch you.”

Was it her imagination or had he moved a bit closer to her?

“Your eyes sparkle like blue diamonds, and I love those curls of yours.
You’ve captured the sunshine.” He reached for her ponytail and bounced
her curls in the palm of his hand.

Breathe. She mustn’t forget to breathe.

He had moved closer. She could smell the spicy odor of his shaving
cream now. It was the same stuff Rocky used. She’d always liked it, but
before this night she’d never realized how sexy it was.

In the background she heard a buzz of quiet laughter from the
partygoers, but they seemed to be in another world far away from her
and Cade. Her eyes fluttered shut as he squeezed her hand and leaned
toward her.

“Hey, hon, so this is where you got to.”

Rocky! Aimee gasped and jerked her hand from Cade’s, praying that Rocky
hadn’t seen them holding hands. Not that they were really holding
hands, but . . . okay they were holding hands, but . . . “Er . . .
isn’t the gazebo beautiful?”

Rocky nodded. “Yep, it sure is. Are you ready to get some refreshments?”

“Yes. Cade, thanks for showing me the gazebo.”

Cade stood and bowed. His eyes bored into hers with such intensity that
Aimee barely restrained a gasp. “It was my pleasure, Miss Aimee.”
“Great characterization,” Rocky praised. “I’ll have to find out how
they did it in the eighteenth century.”

He took Aimee’s hand and pulled her toward the refreshment table. Why
did Rocky always have to interrupt just when she was having a good
time? Oh! My! Goodness! Aimee stumbled and would have fallen if Rocky
hadn’t caught her. What was she thinking? Rocky was her fiancĂ©. She’d
left her old life and committed to spending most of her time hiding out
from bad guys with him. How could she think for one second that his
presence was anything less than a blessing?

Now let's check out A Kiss in the Shadows....

GENRE: Contemporary Romantic Suspense

Erin Grady is used to taking care of people. That’s why she’s thrilled to finally realize her dream of opening a clinic…and why she’s willing to overlook where the money came from—until a determined prosecutor comes sniffing around.

Will Patton is desperate to leave the small fogbound town of Lost Coast Harbor and build a real career for himself. But to do that, he’ll need to expose the dirty police chief—and betray the woman who makes him wonder if he’s leaving town too soon.

But the corruption in Lost Coast Harbor runs deep and wide—and exposing the truth will require Erin and Will to expose their hearts…no matter the risk.

Excerpt:

Will moved closer and reached past her, setting his wine next to hers and the nearness took her breath away. She raised her chin to look him in the eye to protest his bullying, but found herself speechless again, her heart pounding and unable to pull her gaze from his eyes, hooded with need.

God, kiss me. Again. And again.

He reached up and slipped a hand behind her neck, his fingers stroking the soft skin on her nape. Each brush fired her nerves, a heat that spread throughout her body.

This was crazy. She wasn’t into one-night stands, or hookups, or even casual flings. But her last relationship had ended a couple years earlier. She was due, damn it. She was a grown woman and could decide to have casual sex if she wanted to. Just because that wasn’t her usual style, didn’t mean it was necessarily a bad idea. She was just too busy, and worked too many nights. And she knew too much about any potential partner, the hazard of living in a small town for most of one’s life.

Will’s lips brushed across hers and his hand tightened on her neck and any moral objection she might have had flew out the window. Her heart pounded as the kiss grew deeper, more demanding. She inhaled the faint hint of his scent and the rough friction from the slight scruff on his face overwhelmed her. She ran a hand up his hard chest, flattening her palm to feel as much of him as possible.

“Damn.”

His gruff whisper didn’t make sense, but the sound made her shiver. Before she could respond, he kissed her again. Her arms were around his neck, pulling him closer. It wasn’t enough.

Meet the Author and links

Like so many good ideas, Lost Coast Harbor was inspired by a few rounds of margaritas. One sunny afternoon, Lily Danes and Eve Kincaid went to a Mexican restaurant for snacks and tequila and left with the idea for a new series. Inspired by their love of noir movies and 1940s crime novels, they imagined a gritty small town full of crime and corruption, where intrigue and mystery can lead to love and passion.

Eve Kincaid is a lapsed lawyer who decided that fictional crime was more fun than the real deal. When she’s not writing about mysterious women and the dangerous and sexy men who love them, she’s probably shopping for books, lipstick, or imported cheeses to complement a nice California pinot noir.

You can keep up with Eve’s new releases by signing up for her reader newsletter. She’d love to hear from you. Just don’t be creepy about it.

Meet the Character day with Kelli A Wilkins' Ashton Bailey

Please give a warm welcome to Ashton Bailey, the hero from Dangerous Indenture by Kelli A. Wilkins. Today we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the cross hairs for your author?
Where do I start? I’ve been described as “a bit of a rogue” by people: I’m opinioned, have a biting wit, tend to be a bit sarcastic… and yet, I’m utterly charming… when I haven’t been drinking too much at the local tavern. (Laughs.) Of course, these “good qualities” have driven members of my stuffy family utterly mad. They referred to me as the “drunken whoremonger with no sense of responsibility”—but I had my reasons.

When Kelli was writing about me, she was kind enough to see past all of my so-called faults and realized that deep down I’m a sensitive, caring individual who just needed to find my way in the world. Meeting Shauna, the love of my life, changed me for the better.

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?
Shauna Farrow is feisty, clever, and pretty. Most women I’ve dealt with were dimwitted or not terribly interesting. I was intrigued by Shauna’s spirit—she came all the way from Ireland to the Colonies on her own. That takes courage and an internal strength you don’t find in many young ladies in the 1700s. Of course, Shauna did all she could to resist my charms, which made her even more endearing to me. I do love a challenge!

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner?
One night, Shauna and I had a lot of naughty fun on my father’s desk in his study. I was trying to do paperwork and Shauna seduced me. I didn’t resist her advances, however, and took her right then and there. The papers went flying everywhere.

We’ve also been known to take our lovemaking outside. Some nights we’ll go into the garden and make love under the stars. It’s very romantic. And once, we went on a picnic and our lust got the better of us. A group of travelers nearly caught us in the act. We do try to behave… (Sighs) but sometimes it’s much more fun not to!

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?
Commando. Why waste time having to undress?

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure-fire trick they can do to seduce you?
All Shauna needs to do is touch me—anywhere. The feel of her hands running down my chest, light kisses on my stomach, a pat on my backside… Anything she does gets me going, and she knows it!

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wildin and out of bed?
Shauna’s secret spot is along the side of her neck, right near her ear. A gentle stroke, a lick, a kiss, and she melts in my arms. No arguing, no resisting… at that point, she’s all mine.

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Dangerous Indenture?
You mean aside from waking up hung over in bed with a whore, throwing up, and crying like a little girl? Hmm… I think that might have covered it. Kelli put me through my paces and made me stronger for it—but at the time, I didn’t appreciate it much.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Did I mention murder? Dangerous Indenture isn’t just about Shauna and me falling in love and satisfying our lusty desires. A previous servant at Stewart House was murdered and Shauna got it in her head to solve the mystery. Of course, along the way, her life was in danger and another servant mysteriously vanished. Oh, and I was nearly killed.

Kelli did an excellent job of blending romance, mystery, and even a bit of humor into this anything-but-boring historical novel. I’d recommend it to readers everywhere. I’ve also heard that her other historical romance, The Viking’s Witch is an excellent read, as well.

Cover Reveal for Waiting on Faith by Nicole Richard

Title: Waiting on Faith
Series: She's Beautiful Series #2
Author: Nicole Richard
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 26, 2016

She’s a woman running from her past.

He’s a man with a fractured heart.

Natalie Brentwood is determined to escape a life of betrayal and abuse. Vowing to live the life she knows she deserves, despite the one she’s endured.

Cy Davis is no stranger to lies and deceit. He’s harbored a ten-year grudge that could quite possibly ruin his chances with a woman who blindly captured his heart.

But when two people are brought together by fate, can they be the light the other needs? Or will a secret and past insecurity be a test of their love and faith.

A story of love and hate and the depths one will go to bury heartbreak than runs deep.

“Blue,”―he paused to suck my nipple―“I need inside. I can’t take it. I need to be in you, baby.”

“Yes,” I spilled out in desperation.

Laying me right there on the couch, he lavished kisses on my neck, and the tip of his cock tickled my entrance. “Condom,” I managed to pant out through the lust his assault was creating.

I wasn’t ready to go there yet. I was not ready for the possibilities or repercussions of unprotected sex. I was on birth control, but that didn’t matter to me. No matter how careful or cautious a woman was about taking the pill or getting the shot, babies could still happen.

Cy exhaled a hot breath, leaning his forehead to mine. “Got it. I wonder what exactly it is about you that makes me forget my own goddam name.”

“Cy, my pussy is beating, and it’s begging for your cock. Go get the damn condom and fuck me into tomorrow already. Please,” I added as an afterthought. If he didn’t hurry, I would go searching for a vibrator if I had to. Never in my life had I been so sex starved.

He swooped down for a chaste kiss before running off to his room. “Don’t go anywhere,” he threw over his shoulder.

“Why would I go anywhere when you haven’t given me my damn orgasm yet?”

He laughed, shaking his head as he disappeared through his bedroom doorway.

Forty seconds later, he came back into view with a condom in place and string of them hanging from his hand. I couldn’t help but let my giggle escape.

Then he was over me, caging me between his arms and the couch with his cock right where I needed him. I dropped my knees to the sides, spread them as wide as I could and pulled his hips toward me.

“Aren’t we a greedy girl tonight?” He chuckled. “But shit if I don’t think it is the hottest damn thing.”

Cy slammed into me hard and I screamed out, arching into him and pulling him impossibly closer. He set a gentle pace, which made my toes curl and a light sweat break out over my skin.

Murmurs of pleasure fell from my lips before I could stop them. My hips surged to meet his, silently asking him for harder, deeper. He obliged, and my screams escalated with each thrust. Stars and white lights, again. Damn, this man was good.

Nicole was born and raised and currently resides in Hawaii with her husband and two teenage children. At an adolescent age she took a strong liking to reading and even had a pipe dream of writing her own book. Life and growing up had put reading on the far end back burner, but her dream recently came true with her debut novel The Beauty of Grace, book one in the She’s Beautiful Series. A hopeless romantic, she has a love for romance novels which she credits her late mother passing on to her and now an even stronger love to write her own stories.

From the USA Today bestselling author of the Bliss series comes a new spin off series featuring your favorite Bliss series characters who are yet to meet their match.

Matt Taylor’s motto:
“I’m the king of the cut ‘n’ run. I wine them, dine them, then slide inside them, making sure I get up, get dressed and get out before they can even utter the words “second date.”

Mia Roberts’ motto:
“I’m queen of the chase. I meet them, greet them, date them and leave them. A social butterfly, I’m happily single and happy to stay that way.”

The players have been found.

The challenge has been set.

Whatever happens, they’ll soon find out that playing the game can get you played in the best possible way.

“One, if you had a piece of meat – however whorish he may be – in your bed, I’d hope you wouldn’t answer your phone. And two because as hot and juicy as that piece of meat may be, you know the moment you sink your teeth into it, you’re gonna be fucked, one way or another.”
“Wouldn’t mind being fucked,” I mutter. My mind instantly giving me an action packed – and unfortunately short – mental replay of my momentous fuckup last night with Matt. His hands burning through my dress, the taste of him on my tongue, the feel of his hard cock pressing into me…

“Just go part the pink sea and have a one-finger hate-hug with your vagina,” she says, matter-of-factly.

I make an exaggerated gagging noise. “Do not say the word vagina.”

“Why can’t I say vagina, vag, vaaaagiiiiiiinnnnnaaaaa,” she starts to sing.

I can’t stop the giggle and don’t even try because Natalie singing about the business end of lady town is just hysterical. When I can finally compose myself, I explain. “That word is so … so … it’s just eww. Pussy, beaver, minge, foo-foo, punani, snatch; all of that is fine. But vagina, nuh-uh.”Now Nat laughs at me which in turn just makes me smile. I scooch down the bed and snuggle deeper into the mattress to get comfortable.
“And I don’t hate my hoohaa so why would I be giving it an abusive finger-bang?”
“You’re right. You might damage yourself and then you’d never get anywhere near the infamous Mini WD” Matt was named ‘Mini Walking Dildo’ by my friend Mac since he is Noah’s little brother and Noah is the original ‘Walking Dildo’ – well before he met my sister that is.
“True story,” I reply.
“Exactly. You don’t need your downtown to be out of order. You never know when the next big train might come rolling in.”

“My best pick up line?”
“Yep. Hit me with it,” I goad.
“You sure you can handle it, Matty boy?"

I chuckle at the challenge. “Bring it on, Legs.”

“Still don’t get the legs thing,” she mutters.

“It’s because every time I see them I imagine them wrapped around my head."

She chokes down the phone and then the line goes eerily quiet.
“Mia?”
“I’m here. Just hitting pause on that mental image and saving it for later.” Now it’s my turn to swallow my tongue.
“Jesus, woman. Warn a guy before you throw out the Viagra lines.”
“What?” she says, choking down laughter.
“Words like that take a man from floppy to stabby in zero point five seconds.”
“What can I say, it’s a gift.”
